As the problem of global warming intensifies, more and more people begin to pay attention to environmental protection issues. Chaumet Bags also noticed this problem and developed backpacks made of recycled fabrics.
We primarily use recycled polyester and recycled nylon.
Recycled Polyester Fabric
Polyester is another common material used in backpacks. Discarded plastic bottles are a major source of recycled polyester, alongside industrial plastic waste. Removing plastic bottles from landfills and recycling them into new products is a good reason to choose recycled polyester products.The GRS-certified recycled polyester we use has almost the same properties compared to virgin polyester but with significant environmental benefits. It's durable, lightweight, wrinkle-resistant, colorfast, quick-drying, stain-resistant, eco-friendly, and economical.
An important advantage of using recycled polyester compared to virgin polyester is that there are fewer bottles in landfill. Plastic bottles are reused in the fiber production process of recycled polyester which in turn has great benefits in reducing earth pollution as well as water and air pollution. It also means reducing the use of petroleum used to produce virgin polyester.
The recycled polyester fibers we use are produced through a mechanical process. As a result, no chemicals are used in the production process - another big win for the environment.
Recycled Nylon Fabric
Nylon is a plastic that is very commonly used in backpacks (it gives it qualities like strength and water resistance). But for all its advantages, plastic is still plastic — derived from petroleum products, and therefore not environmentally friendly at all.
We use bluesign® certified recycled nylon obtained from waste nylon from fishing nets, carpets, nylon clothing, and more. The process of recycling nylon is less resource-intensive than virgin nylon but more expensive.
Most mechanically recycled materials are melted at high temperatures; this process destroys the contaminants and converts the material into a reusable form. Nylon, however, melts at a much lower temperature, leaving behind contaminants. Therefore, it must be thoroughly cleaned before recycling. Good sources of clean post-consumer nylon are hard to find, but we're working closely with our recycling partners to ensure the recycled nylon we use is pure and still performs well.
In Spring 2023, 60% of the polyester and nylon fabric we use to make our backpacks will be recycled. This season we saved more than 4 million pounds of CO2 emissions by using recycled fabrics compared to virgin fabrics.
